“Attending the February ‘Learn about Radio’ Course at Dundalk FM were Sinead Rafferty, Conor McGinnity, Cormac McAdam and Conor Myers. Sinead was a presenter on a teenage show called ‘Anything but Ordinary’ on Dundalk Weekend Radio DWR 107FM in 2003. She recently completed her Communications and Media Studies Course at the DKIT and designs posters, business cards and websites. Conor and Cormac are studying Communications at DCU and both are considering taking on the Radio option in second Year. They play in a Dundalk band called ‘Crafty Crimson Cats’ and are interested in a ‘First Cut’ programme showcasing all local musicans and bands - whatever genre of music. Conor Myers is getting ready for the Pre-Leaving Cert exams in the De La Salle Secondary School, Dundalk and produces his own music at home using GarageBand software. He is applying to Ballyfermeot College to study Radio Production in September.”

Last week We attended the best in show 08 at the digital hub where our DKIT 4th year final project Aftermath08 was on display. The event was brilliant with many interesting projects. Compared to last years best in show event, there were more arty projects on display this year where as last year projects had a more interactive theme. This years best in show event had a running theme throughout it which was based on reality. The event was a great success and thanks to the lectures who attended to support our work.
“Graduate exhibitions are held in colleges every year. They are often the first opportunity for students to showcase their work to a public audience in a professional way. These end-of-year graduate shows happen in quick succession, and therefore students and tutors from one institution do not always get the time to see work by their peers in other institutions. ‘Best in Show’ aims to bring together under one roof, in The Digital Hub, Dublin, the very best graduate work from a cross section of colleges/universities.
Each year The Digital Hub invites students from all disciplines to submit their work if they think it’s the best in their graduate exhibition. A panel from The Digital Hub then visits graduate exhibitions across the country to evaluate the student’s work and select a number of works to showcase at the ‘Best in Show’ exhibition in November.
‘Best in Show’ is an excellent opportunity for graduates to network with their contemporaries and showcase their work to potential employers and gallery representatives. It also provides a stepping stone for recent graduate to apply for exhibitions, gallery representation and employment. ‘Best in Show’ is an occasion for colleges and universities to highlight the diverse range of work being produced by students from their creative and technology courses.
Following on from the success of the inaugural show in 2007, ‘Best in Show’ is fast becoming a must-see exhibition for digital media students, graduates and industry figures. In early 2008, The Digital Hub called for submissions from students who considered their work to have the best digital content in their graduate exhibition. Proposals were received from colleges all over Ireland and the UK, and eight pieces were chosen for the Best in Show exhibition. Games, films, animations and installations will feature creating a diverse and exciting show at The Digital Hub from 20th – 27th November 2008.”
Aftermath08 is part of a new and emergent multimedia genre known as ‘Alternate Reality Gaming’. The game is structured around an interactive narrative that uses multiple media and game elements to engage players, encourage collaboration and tell a story. The game ran for a five week duration through April and May 2008 attracting players from as far a field as Sweden, Australia, Canada and the United States. Throughout the duration of the game players were sucked into a story about the mysterious disappearance of various employees of the fictional Dundalk-based company, Identicryption. Players worked their way through secret websites and coded messages in the search for the truth about the disappearance of the employees. Before long they were unraveling a trail of identity theft, fraud, lies and murder. For Info Aftermath08 and how the game was played please go to www.postaftermath.com
